Sheriff

Do you remember Sheriff Rosco in  “The Dukes of Hazzard” (“Shérif, fais-moi peur” in French) TV series of the early 1980s? 

I saw this sheriff car in the old town of Alexandria, in Virginia, a few weeks ago. They have sheriffs across the US in most States, but not in the District of Columbia. 

They are elected at a county level (each State is composed of several counties). They  are responsible for keeping the peace and enforcing the law in their county. You can easily recognize them with their star-shaped badges.
